2012 Writing Contest - I Love Living in...

Welcome to the first and hopefully annual student writing contest for Northumberland County, Cobourg and Port Hope.

The theme of this first contest is "I love living in..." and writers can choose, Cobourg, Port Hope, Northumberland County or any community therein.

Any student who attends school and resides in Northumberland County Ontario is eligible to enter.

There are three levels of entry, with corresponding prizes for first place writers, and lots of goodies for runners up too. Each level will have its own set of guidlines and rules as appropriate for the age group. Judges for each category will be familiar with the curriculum of any given grade so as to be able to appropriately handicap the level of writing based on expectations for any given grade. The levels are separated based on grade level, not age, so there should be no confusion as to which level to enter under.

The three levels are:

1.) Grades 1 through 4 - Grand Prize for this category is A Themed Pizza Party at the Cobourg YMCA for winner and seven friends (doesn't even have to be your birthday!) Date subject to availability.

  • Submissions to be hand written on no more than one page (less is fine) one side only
  • Legible print or script - pencil or, blue or black pen (no typing at this level)
  • Double spaced on white lined or blank paper
  • Grammar and spelling as appropriate for the grade (we're primarily judging content here)
  • A cover page stapled top left corner with: Title (I love living in - fill in the blank -, Author's name, School, Grade, and Contact information)
  • No additional cover material (including duotangs, binders, etc. - only two 8x11 stapled pages, one cover, one submisison)

*** All submissions must be in-hand or Post Office-dated for on or before March 31st, 2012 in order to qualify ***

This is not a contest of all creativity, so we are not looking for stories embellished with photos, drawings, illustrations, doodles, etc. We are looking for crisp, tight writing that tells an engaging story beginning to end. So if you think you have the writing bug in you and/or you know just why Northumberland County, Cobourg or Port Hope are the best places to live, then pick up a pen and get writing! You've got nothing to lose and there's lots to win - we look forward to reading what you have to say about our great communities!

By entering this contest, parents and submitters agree to allow their works to be used in future advertising, promotional, Internet and public display materials by the HodgesLodges Team and Chestnut Park Real Estate Limited, Brokerage. Submitted works will not be returned (so photocopy them before sending them in!) and only original works will be accepted. Only winners will be contacted. Winners will be announced on Saturday April 28th at the HodgesLodges / Chestnut Park Real Estate Booth at this year's Spring Home and Leisure Show taking place in the Cobourg Community Centre located on D'arcy St. (free entry!) - so be sure to swing by and have a peak at the winning and other stories submitted by the students of Northumberland County.
